The Great Elephant Migration | Texas Takeover

Texas just got a whole lot bigger as The Great Elephant Migration has landed in The Lone Star State.

The Great Elephant Migration herd in Houston, Texas.

Where Can You Find the Elephants in Texas?

From April 1–April 30, 2025, you can view The Great Elephant Migration exhibition for free at Hermann Park Conservancy. The stop-you-in-your-tracks installation features a sculpted herd of over 100 elephants who have been making their way across America, raising awareness and vital funds for wildlife conservation worldwide.

The majority of the herd will be located within the park’s newest destination, the Commons, with smaller herds located at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Texas Medical Centre. This is the fourth stop on the herd’s US journey, following fantastic exhibitions in Newport, Rhode Island, New York’s Meatpacking District, and Miami Beach.

What is The Great Elephant Migration?

The global fundraising campaign brings together Indigenous artisans, contemporary artists, and cultural institutions to amplify Indigenous knowledge and inspire humanity to embrace the idea of sharing space with wildlife.

The Great Elephant Migration is a woman-led conservation effort, reflecting the matriarchal structures that elephants uphold in the wild, with each herd led by an experienced female elder. To further honour this, the campaign has formed ‘The Matriarchy’ a group of influential women across diverse fields who rally support for human-wildlife coexistence. Current members of ‘The Matriarchy’ include Cher, Susan Sarandon and Dr. Sylvia Earle.

The Elephant Sculptures

Each sculpture is one of a kind and based on a real-life elephant that lives alongside the 200 Indigenous artisans in India. The artisans, known as The Real Elephant Collective, have crafted the herd by reclaiming an invasive plant species called Lantana camara that has entangled India’s forests, driving wildlife away and diminishing food sources for herbivores. Lantana camara is also a significant issue in Texas, spreading beyond gardens and disrupting native ecosystems.

Similarly, Hermann Park Conservancy actively manages invasive species in the park to protect Houston’s wooded spaces, making it the perfect spot for our elephants. In a city where green spaces are rare and crucial, conservation efforts like these ensure that Houston’s residents and its wildlife can continue to share space, just as The Great Elephant Migration inspires coexistence on a global scale.

A Giant Joins the Herd

Houston’s stop welcomes an extraordinary new arrival—Matt, the massive male tusker! Standing at 10 feet tall and weighing over six tonnes, the new sculpture is based on a real Kenyan elephant. As one of Kenya’s largest tuskers, he was closely monitored by Save The Elephants, which fitted him with a GPS collar in 2002, revealing groundbreaking insights into elephant migration.

“The Great Elephant Migration is more than an art installation—it is a call to action and a place to experience joy,” said Cara Lambright, president & CEO of Hermann Park Conservancy. “By bringing this breathtaking global effort to Hermann Park, we are inviting our community to be part of a worldwide movement to protect ecosystems, eradicate invasive species, and inspire change. These are shared values that span continents.”

The herd will continue on their journey, and we’ll be sure to bring you along with us. If you can’t catch them in Texas, they’ll next be heading to:

📍Jacksonville, Wyoming (May-June)

📍Blackfeet Nation, Buffalo Pastures, Montana (June)

📍Los Angeles, California (July)

Stay tuned for updates as The Great Elephant Migration continues its journey across America!
