A great baseball cap should feel effortless, sun-ready and stylish enough to take you from beach walks to sundowners. But where did this timeless accessory originate, and how did the humble baseball cap become a wardrobe must-have? Let’s dive in…

Why Do They Call It a Baseball Cap?

We’ll give you one guess! People first made baseball caps in 19th-century America. Designers created them for baseball players to block the sun from their eyes. Players figured that games would go much better if they could actually see the ball without being blinded by the sun or using their hands to shield their eyes.

The first official baseball team was formed in 1845. However, the baseball cap we know today came later. Early players wore straw hats known as “chip” hats, which were far from practical for the game.

A few years later, teams like the Brooklyn Excelsiors switched to a merino cap. While it kicked off the baseball cap revolution, it looked more like a beanie or beret compared to today’s baseball hat. Known as the No. 1, it retailed for $1 to $2 and laid the foundations for a global wardrobe classic.

That same team then brought us closer to today’s baseball cap with what is now called the “Brooklyn-style cap.” They extended the brim and gave it a deep, button-topped crown. While these caps had the modern look about them, they were still missing that all-important logo.

That changed in 1894 when the Boston Baseball Club became the first team to feature a monogram on its caps. Logos quickly spread across the league, followed by mascots, turning caps into symbols of identity as well as function.

Fast forward to the 1940s, and a major design milestone arrived: the six-panel cap with a structured crown and curved brim. Originally designed for sport, it quickly crossed over into everyday wear, cementing its place as a timeless wardrobe staple.

Why Baseball Caps Are a Resort Wear Essential

A great baseball cap is one of the hardest-working pieces in mens resort wear. When you are travelling, space is precious, and the right cap earns its place in your suitcase fast. It is there for early morning beach walks, lazy pool days, long lunches and sunset drinks.

Of course, there’s the practical side. In warm destinations, sun protection is non-negotiable, and a baseball cap keeps things cool while letting you stay out longer. Lightweight, easy to wear and even easier to pack, it beats heavier hats every time.

Style-wise, a baseball cap brings that relaxed, just-landed feeling to any outfit. Throw one on with a linen shirt, swim shorts or a soft polo and suddenly the look feels effortless. It’s the perfect finishing touch for modern resort apparel, without it feeling overstyled.

Baseball caps also transition seamlessly between settings. Worn poolside during the day, then kept on for a casual walk through town or an outdoor bar in the evening, they reflect the laid-back rhythm of island life.

What Sets a Premium Cap Brand Apart

Not all baseball caps have the same quality. A premium cap brand focuses on detail, uses quality materials, and is committed to lasting design. From fit to finish, every element plays a role in how a cap looks, feels and performs over time.

It starts with the fabric. High-quality cotton and breathable linen make all the difference in warm climates, letting air flow while keeping things light and comfortable. Add careful stitching and smart design, and you get a cap that holds its shape. It looks good whether it just came out of your suitcase or has been worn all week by the pool.

Then there is sustainability, which for us has always been just as important as style. It is about designing with care, without compromising on look or feel, choosing responsible materials and vegan alternatives that feel good to wear in every sense.

Ultimately, a premium cap brand offers more than just an accessory. It delivers a piece that feels intentional, versatile and enduring.

What Are the Unwritten Rules of Wearing a Baseball Cap?

Cap lovers know there are a few unwritten rules, such as removing your cap indoors. If you’re sitting down for dinner at the resort restaurant or kicking back in your suite, it’s usually best to take it off.

That said, there are exceptions, such as when you’re in the lobby or in a bar (especially if there’s a game on!)

Can Anyone Wear a Baseball Cap?

Yes! Absolutely anyone can don a baseball cap; that’s part of their beauty. They’re a versatile accessory suitable for any gender or style. Whether worn to protect from the sun on an island getaway or to elevate a simple look, a baseball cap always works.

From its early days on the baseball field to its place in modern resort style, the baseball cap has proven it is more than just a practical accessory. It is a symbol of ease, individuality and everyday adventure. Wherever your next escape takes you, a Love Brand cap is ready to come along for the journey, sun on your face, sea breeze in the air and style that feels as good as it looks.
