8 Styling Tips to Stay Cool in Hot Weather

As a Bahamas-inspired brand, we travel a lot in hot weather. With heatwaves around the world and temperatures in London even reaching 40°C, the question is: what to wear in very hot weather if you want to stay cool as well as stylish?

Here are our eight styling tips to keep you cool in searing heat.

1. Choose natural fabrics

In hot weather, plastic fibres are not your friend, or the planet’s for that matter. Instead, choose natural fibres like linen and 100% cotton. Linen, for example, has an open weave, which makes it breathable, allowing sweat to evaporate and escape rather than being trapped.

2. Wear white and light colours

Anything white, cream or light-coloured is best for hot weather. Lighter colours, especially white, reflect both visible sunlight and infrared heat. Black is the worst colour to choose as it absorbs heat.

3. Shorts!

Shorts are a no-brainer for hot weather, but you still need to be mindful of the type you’re choosing. Relaxed, loose-fitting shorts are the best choice as they allow air to circulate.

4. Keep ankles uncovered

Losing your socks and exposing your ankles with a pair of espadrilles is an easy way to help regulate your body temperature. Large blood vessels and veins run close to the skin’s surface in this area. When a breeze catches them, it helps cool the blood flowing through your body, giving your natural temperature control a helping hand.

The same trick works for your wrists, too. If you’re reaching for a long-sleeve linen shirt, just roll up the sleeves.

5. Avoid a tie; instead, add an unstructured jacket

Ties and hot weather don’t mix well. They trap body heat and restrict airflow around the neck (another area with major blood vessels). To keep a smart look, swap the tie for a lightweight, LB unstructured linen jacket.

6. Say yes to Panama hats and caps

Panama hats and caps not only complete a look, but also act as physical shields that block the sun from hitting your scalp and face. They can help you feel noticeably cooler while reducing your risk of sunburn and overheating. Opt for a lightweight linen or cotton cap for breathability.

7. Keep shirts untucked

In hot weather, it’s all about airflow. Keep shirts untucked to prevent body heat from getting trapped and making you even warmer.

8. Invest in quick-drying swim shorts

Swim shorts are a must; there’s no quicker way to cool down than with a dip in the pool or ocean.
