Reynisfjara, Iceland

Step onto the shores of Reynisfjara where the sea takes on a deeper shade of sapphire against the shimmering black sands. If your holiday read is a sci-fi novel, you’ve found the perfect spot to dive into its pages. The captivating, lunar-esque landscape and dark cave towers of Reynisfjara create an otherworldly experience like no other, making it a popular filming location. Films including ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and ‘Oblivion’ have captured its mystical beauty on-screen. And while you’re there, be sure to look out for wild puffins darting by, their tangerine-coloured beaks adding a splash of colour to the dramatic scene.

Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, Hawaii

Nestled on the southeastern coast of the Big Island sits Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, a mesmerising gem often visited alongside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. While the black sand itself is magical, imagine lounging on it while turtles dance around your feet. These enchanting creatures are known to bask under the sun here, adding an unforgettable touch to your tropical escape.

If you're looking for a quieter black beach, the Black Sand Beach in Bali is for you. Bask in long walks without being swarmed by hoards of travellers. Listen to how gently the breeze travels through the trees as waves gently lap the shore inviting you into the tempting waters.

What causes black sand beaches?

The charred palette of black and smoky greys is the result of lava and other volcanic materials. When molten lava meets the ocean, it cools rapidly, shattering into tiny fragments of sand. A significant lava flow entering the sea can produce enough particles to form a new black sand beach almost overnight. The iconic black sand beaches of Hawaii, including Punaluʻu Beach and Kehena Beach, were created almost instantaneously from the dramatic and violent dance between fiery lava and the cooling embrace of seawater.

Which countries have black sand beaches?

Black sand beaches are scattered all across the globe. However, as they rely on the artistry of active volcanoes they are a rarity with only about 20 of these striking coastal gems in existence. From the enchanting shores of Hawaii and Iceland to the mystic coastlines of Greece and Japan, these unique beaches offer a glimpse into nature’s most extraordinary creations.

Did you know black is a surprisingly practical choice for wearing in the heat? When heat meets a black garment, it’s lost before it can even stick to the skin. This makes loose-fitting black clothing, like our new mens linen shirts, an excellent option for summer.
