A significant lava flow entering the sea can produce enough particles to form a new black sand beach almost overnight. The iconic black sand beaches of Hawaii, including Punaluʻu Beach and Kehena Beach, were created almost instantaneously from the dramatic and violent dance between fiery lava and the cooling embrace of seawater.
