Linen vs Cotton: Which Is Better for Hot Weather?

Linen and cotton are both hailed as hot weather staples; it’s why our resort wear range comprises mostly these fabrics. But which is better for keeping cool and comfortable when temperatures soar? From breathability to moisture-wicking abilities, let's compare both textiles.

What Is Linen?

Linen fabric comes from the natural bast fibres of the flax plant. Farmers harvest the flax plants and strip off the seeds and leaves before they break the stalks to separate the inner fibres. Like cotton, manufacturers then spin these fibres into yarn and make the fabric from there.

What Is Cotton?

Cotton is a soft, natural, plant-based fibre which grows around the seeds of the cotton plant. The fabric itself comes from these fluffy fibres, which give it that luxuriously soft texture. The fibres are spun into yarn, then the yarn is woven or knitted into fabric.

Is 100% Linen the Same as 100% Cotton?

While both are great in warm weather, here are 6 key differences:

1. Durability

Linen fibres are naturally stronger than cotton. This means your favourite linen pieces can last for many holidays to come with proper care. The fibres are longer and woven more tightly into the yarn, giving the fabric extra strength and staying power.

2. Appearance

Part of the charm of pure linen is that it doesn’t mind a wrinkle. In fact, the more lived-in it looks, the better. Naturally textured, it creates that effortlessly relaxed, just-back-from-the-beach look. Cotton tends to be smoother and more uniform.

3. Breathability

When the temperature rises, both are brilliant at keeping things breezy. But linen has a little extra airflow thanks to its looser, more open weave.

4. Moisture-Wicking

Linen is a natural when it comes to hot and humid weather. It manages moisture well and dries quickly, while its slightly stiffer fibres help stop the fabric from clinging to your skin when temperatures soar.

Standard cotton absorbs sweat more easily but can hold onto moisture longer. Terry cotton, on the other hand, is excellent at wicking moisture, making it perfect for throwing on after a dip. Its looped texture pulls moisture away from the skin and allows for air circulation to dry the fabric.

5. Softness

When it comes to feel, cotton is definitely the softer of the two fabrics. It's luxuriously soft from the outset, whereas linen is stiffer but softens gradually with each wash.

6. Hypoallergenic

Both linen and cotton are hypoallergenic, making them great for sensitive skin. Linen takes the upper hand slightly here as the lower thread count and loose weave are less likely to trap dust and other irritants.
